Briefcase for law job

I have a slightly more specific question than "please recommend a briefcase," so I hope this justifies a new thread.

I'm a 24 year old law student, and I'll be working at a firm in NYC this summer (and hopefully after graduation). The firm has a business formal dress code. I'm wondering how formal of a briefcase I'm going to need. Ideally, I'd like something that can go between work and my last year and a half of law school without looking unacceptable at either place. If I had my druthers, I'd be using a Filson briefcase right now, but I'm not sure that would do at the law firm. So, can any NYC lawyers comment on the briefcase mores of your firm?

The Filson will be fine. Actually, it seems most NYC lawyers don't even carry briefcases. I actually get chided by co-workers and friends for carrying one. And the truth is, I don't really need it: I just like to put stuff in there instead of my pockets. It's not like you will be frequently taking documents home.

Out of curiosity, what do nyc lawyers carry?

Nothing, it seems. Sometimes, some sort of messenger or shoulder bag. Rarely, a serious briefcase.

So you're saying lawyers finally have discovered e-mail and electronic archiving?

The sort of documents you might be carrying in it won't be "briefs," so you're better off getting one with some serious capacity.

I do carry one, but most don't.

Although I work in SF, I agree. For the most part, I use a black ballistic nylon Hartmann bag that I picked up on sale for less than $100 to carry my phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses and odds and end . I also use it to carry my gym clothes rather than carrying a Nike bag into the office.

Is this a home-to-work-and-back-to-home briefcase you are talking about, or a work-to-courthouse briefcase? As much as I love Filson canvas, I wouldn't be bringing it to court!
