Custom Marlondo carry on set, 16" briefcase and 22" duffle. Veg-tan calfskin with a pigskin liner and nickel hardware. While the buckles are a bit harder to get open in a hurry than clasps or zippers, I wanted something heavy-duty that would work equally well with jeans and a suit and I think these do the job admirably. Leather is pleasantly thick and not too corrected, can't wait to see how these look after I drag them behind my car for a few miles to break them in

Trying to hash out some last minute details on a Frank Clegg briefcase purchase.

I am pretty set on the commuter briefcase, most likely in black. My biggest hemming and hawing is about chèvre vs. the tumbled leather. I like that goat is a bit lighter, a bit more “interesting,” and unique, and a bit better with water (though maybe not really significantly so).

So I’m primarily wondering if there’s anything folks think I ought to know regarding chèvre vs. tumbled that might not be obvious. I’m in NYC and don’t want to have to baby the leather, and don't want to worry too much about it getting marks or scuffs and effecting the look too much.

I was also considering adding a handle clasp but saw one with it in person at the Armoury and think it may just be not that useful at best and an annoyance at worst. Same goes for the luggage carry on pocket, would be nice to have but I’m not sure I want an extra zipper on one side for the relatively few times a year I actually use it…

Lastly I’m wondering if anyone here has a Clegg briefcase with lining, and how much weight that might actually add. I was considering it, but at the end of the day I’m not sure what the lining actually adds.

Thanks for anyone's thoughts!

Nice. I’ve had my Chèvre for a while. I need to post some pictures it has brown in nicely.

I meant to comment and was going to recommend chèvre if you did black. The texture adds interest to what is a fairly conservative color choice. Nice pick-up!

Thanks. Was pretty set on black but loved the way the chèvre added just a little bit extra. Saving a bit of weight (site says a difference of 0.4 lb so not much) is nice too.

Lighting isn’t the best but here are some pictures. I have a little bit of indigo transfer on the Cognac leather straps. Probably time to treat the straps again but the chèvre still looks great. Love the grain. Love the lighter weight. I’d guess it is more than half a pound lighter.

Looks great! I think another bonus is the material contrast with the straps, and that the grain seems to hide any creasing or marks that may bother me otherwise.

Is the hardware silver or brass? If brass, does anyone know if Clegg has a silver hardware option?
It's brass but I believe they offer silver hardware if you ask for it (I've seen someone in this thread with the same suitcase in black tumbled leather with silver hardware).

Frank Clegg would be my first call. I have his lined tall tote. I also have an unlined working tote. He has a new market tote. I am sure he could make it with a fastener like that. He has a choice of leather on his site, most of which looks more refined than that picture. Check out his site and give Frank or Ian a call.
