Holy ****. This is the star Mira, streaking through the galaxy at supersonic speed (291,000 MPH). The NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer took this shot.

This brings-up another question. Do we have any amateur astronomers here? I built an 8" telescope in HS but haven't used it in years, since it's useless in the city. I'll probably start-up that hobby once i move down south and buy a house away from the city lights.

What are stars exactly? If you were to go close-up to a "star" what would it be? Is there any answers to this?
