Breast pocket and pocket watch…

I was watching "˜Shadowlands' with Anthony Hopkins as C. S. Lewis and in one scene he is sporting a sports coat with a pocket watch in his breast pocket, with the chain coming up and ending attached to the lapel button.

Of out of curiosity, was this common practice in a previous era, when waistcoat was not worn?
