I just bought an old Brannock device on eBay. It says that it is made for men. When I measured my foot it clearly showed that I am a a size 11.5. However, I always wear size 10.5 shoes. Does anyone know what's up? Have shoe sizes changed? Has the device changed over the years?

Thanks!

What's the point of those things? You already know your approximate size, which tells you where to start with any new pair of shoes whose sizing may be different in either direction.

I guess this device doesn't have a lot of use for people on SF,different shoes fit differently and in different sizes,it is for people who purchase shoes once in a while.I've used them number of times in the stores and it always showed the right size for me.

yeah but your shoe size doesn't change? I guess they're useful for kids.

It changes from maker to different maker.

The Brannock just gives you a basis for measurement. Each maker fits different but it helps to have a basis for comparison. The Brannock doesn't take into account foot shape too which can alter the fitting of a shoe.

I suggest you read up on how to use the thing. This is a good place to start: http://brannock.com/cgi-bin/start.cg...tructions.html http://www.brannock.com/history.html "The first requisite is ball to heel measurement, that is, measuring the length at the ball joint so that when the shoe is fitted the arch of the foot will rest correctly in the arch of the shoe. " Are you measuring ball to heel, or just length? Above all, you have to use common sense. If you are comfortable in your current shoes, then they are right for you.

Consider that we by shoes to fit the ball of the foot, not so much the longest part of the toes. My toes measure at 10.5-11. My best fit is on average a size 12. I think this is fairly common.

My ball measurement on the Brannock is around 11.5, and close to 12 in one foot. My toes measure 10.5 at most. I usually buy 11.5D or sometimes 11E.

I've always wondered: who goes into the shoe shop without even an approximate idea of their size? If that's all the Brannock gives you, what good is it?

A knowledgeable shoe salesperson (a rarity these days) can convert the Brannock measurements to the shoe brands he or she stocks. They might know that 11D on the Brannock Device translates to an Alden Barrie last 10.5, or whatever. At best, though, the purpose of the Brannock Device is to provide a good estimate, since everyone has different shaped feet.
