Branded Athletic Wear Question?

I asked this question at Ask Andy About Clothes and quickly got snarked at. A more helpful member suggested I ask the question here where I might get more useful feedback. Hopefully he was correct.

I need the forum to settle a dispute between my son and me. He believes that if he is wearing an Adidas sweatshirt, for example, that he should also be wearing Adidas shoes. I think he is being a bit uptight and that it is fine to wear an Adidas shirt and Nike, for example, shoes. For context, my son is 19 and is big into basketball and working out. He and his crowd go most everywhere in athletic attire. Part of the problem is that this desire to match has the potential to cost me so extra bucks.

So what does the forum think?

Hey RP, welcome to the forum. We have a weekly thread that would be great for questions like this. Next time you have a quick question, check it out. Here is the link for this week:

I mix and match and don't really care....so do my kids. I have a ton of Man Utd football (soccer) jerseys and they are sponsored by Nike...next year it will be Adidas. I wouldn't swap out my entire athletic wardrobe to account for their sponsorship change. I know some people who would though. Cheers.

Some people have brand loyalty, and that's fine, but if your son wants to look good he should learn to mix and match. Make him read Naomi Klein's "No Logo" and teach him the facades of consumerism. On a more practical note, Adidas has a terrible sneaker collection, he can do better and probably even for cheaper. Also I think the biggest basketball athlete Adidas has is Derrick Rose and he's a terrible professional and a ****** point guard, make him get a new role model like Kyle Korver.

The more I think about it, the more I think this may be a brand loyalty issue rather than a matching issue. Some people are just Adidas guys and some are just Nike guys. With all due respect to Naomi Klein, there is probably something to be said for brand loyalty that is different from just being a brand trend chaser.

If your style is street, I would match the brands. However, I think would be okay to match an Adidas hat with another sneaker with no visible/very subtle branding (not Nike), for example. It's more of a style thing than loyalty thing, at least what I've observed on Superfuture.
