I think most reasonable people wouldn’t give a 9 year old a hard time about their shoe choice. That being said, black oxfords would be probably the best choice. A Chelsea boot would be acceptable IMO. Loafers might be a bit too casual.

I agree that loafers would be too casual.

But the kid is 9.

Black is safe and repeatable. Chelsea boots a stylish choice too!

Wedding guest outfit, early October in Chicago, age 9.
He chose a light grey suit, white shirt, medium-dark violet vest & tie.

Does he have to wear brown shoes?
Or is black okay?
If black is okay, does it have to be oxfords? Can it be Chelsea boots?
What about these dark blue leather loafers with a black sole? (https://www.zara.com/us/en/leather-loafers-with-bow-p15515303.html?v1=6448692&v2=1080012)

Or any better ideas?

Aged 9 - I'd let him wear whatever he's comfortable in, even if its trainers.

Either a black captoe or a tan brogue wingtips. I would personally choose the latter.

Black Oxfords, and don’t spend too much. For obvious reasons one hesitates to invest in a nine-year-old’s shoes. This is a case where the usual rule of buy-the-best can be ignored. Buy something that will look shiny for at least a day. Don’t worry about full-grain leather.

Also nine-year-olds should go easy on the champagne.
