box pleats vs. shoulder pleats?

what are the relative pros/cons of these two? Im ordering my first Land's End custom shirt, and figure consulting SF is a better idea than flipping a coin.

I think box pleats are good for Oxfords, but shoulder pleats are a dressier look.

Box pleats are not much good. They add fullness where none is needed. Shoulder pleats add fullness where it is needed--over the shoulder blades. Plus, they're more distinctive.

Unfortunately, land's end does not offer a no-pleat option.

I order shoulder pleats.

Pleats aren't about fit -- they exist to allow more freedom of movement. I can see the argument that a perfectly fitted shirt shouldn't need them, but I like a little fullness. And LE isn't quite the same as having full bespoke from a master shirtmaker. .

Go with shoulder pleats. If there were the option, I'd go with none.

Strictly a matter of preference, I would think. I prefer no pleats myself for a cleaner look, but I can't imagine anyone thinking less of you or your shirt because it had shoulder pleats. I think we as a whole on SF largely overestimate the keen eye for sartorial detail of the average office worker in America.

I agree. Altho on my buttondowns I prefer boxpleats that run all the way down to the hem. No practical reason for it other than aesthetics and an homage to "The Look"

Shoulder pleats add fullness over the shoulder blades, where you may need it even in a custom shirt. I see nothing wrong with them on a "business" shirt. Almost all of my shirts have them.

I prefer no pleats or small shoulder pleats.

Box pleats seem to be another "for your comfort" invention along the lines of triple pleated pants that does disservice to most body types.

If you have a good shirtmaker, you don't. But luckily, I do, and I agree that as a matter of style and preference, I go without pleats when I can. Although there is nothing wrong with pleats...
