There's a seller on e-bay that has hundreds of silk bow ties, this is an example:Bow Tie Would something like this be a functional starter tie? I don't currenlty wear any neckwear of any sort as I don't have a reason to. I'd like to be able to spice up my coat/button down occasionally though and have no desire at all for a regular tie. Beside being made of silk, is there anything in particular I should look for when shopping for bow?

You want silk (as you said), and you want adjustable (unless your sure it's made to your neck size). I don't know about that fellow's ties as I've never seen one. For the price it's certainly not a big risk. Good brands to look for on ebay are Hanauer, Talbott, Brooks Brothers, Polo, Carrot & Gibbs. Bow Tie Club offers monthly specials that are at a good price. I have a couple of theirs and can vouch for the quality. Also take a look at these at Ben Silver. Obviously both are more than the ebay guy, but I think you'd be sure to have a quality tie at about half what you'd generally pay retail.

Thanks, food for thought. I guess I'm afraid of falling into either of two situations. The first is dropping $100 on 2 or 3 ties just to discover that it's just not going to work for me. $100 of silk goes to the kids play clothes pile.
The second is one where because I buy cheap crap I end up not feeling comforatble in a bow, whereas with a better quality purchase I would have felt better and worn one better.
I guess there is no way to know but get a couple and see what happens. My gut feeling is that even if the ties are sub-par quality wise if I still have a good feeling with them on then I'll look into better ones. I did spend quite a bit of time at Bow Tie Club's site and just love many many of their ties. If only they feel as good on my neck as they do in my imagination.
    Thank you.
