i now know that collar points should stay under the jacket lapel for a more finished look but i have many shirts with collars that don't meet that criteria that were purchased before i was aware of collar lengths, heights and spreads etc. my question is could i presume a modicum of leeway if said shirts are worn with bowties?

I am not sure what your shirts will look like, but I am guessing that bowties might help. They won't help much if the collar is floating out of your lapel, but might they might help keep it from doing that and will also help a badly shaped collar be less noticeable.

If you want a better opinion, post a pic of one of the worst offenders, worn with a bowtie.

I wear bowties very often, and I sometimes think about this point, too. However, I was always under the impression that bowties are properly worn only with button-down collars. I typically wear them only with OCBDs, and rarely with full suits.

Edit: This, of course, presumes the wearer is not in black-tie regalia.

No reason you can't wear one with a regular dress shirt and any collar for that matter.

There is a wide gap (pardon the pun) between a cutaway and a BD. But either way, I think it is entirely fine. That said though, I do not own any cutaway collar shirts. But with spread, bows are fine.

I ditest wearing them with button down collars that only gives in to the nerdy image. as long as you have a good knott and with of the wings you can wear on with any style collar. If you are having trouble keeping you collar laying down yes bowties to help but you might also tries collar stays. Even plain shirts have the ability to have collar stays added, it might really make a diffrence.
