Basil is blah. People like Knob Creek because it is the female of the pack, there is no roughness to it, it is a sweet mess and Ill never understand why people drink it. Makers might not be great, but it is decent and has some bite to it. Personally Pappy Van Winkle is also highly overrated, Bookers is far superior and has all the elements I look for in a good bourbon.

When Im feeling cheap I usually get Rittenhouse which is outstanding, and Rebel Yell when it feels like a Rebel Yell kind of night if you catch my drift.

I am just getting to enjoy Burbon. I tried to get into Scottch but I couldn't find a taste for it. I am enjoying Burbon's but havent gone to far off the beaten path yet, still with Makers, Knobb, Woodfords. I haven't made it through all 53 pages of this thread yet, but I will.

Try to find Noah's Mill, Michter's, or Booker's, they are a good next step and they're relatively inexpensive.

Tried a new liquor store in my town today. Surprised to see they had a bit more bourbon than other stores. Mind you, Bourbon is not that plenty in liquor stores here. Picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 y/o. Will give it try tonight.

BTW, anyone have experience with Blanton's Single Barrel (the yellowish label)? Is it worth the extra pennies over the Special Reserve (with the green label)?

Have had the Single Barrel, but never the special reserve. Have actually never even seen the SR, might be only for the export market? In any case, Blanton's is a very good, if somewhat bland bourbon. It actually drinks more like a Tennessee Whiskey to me.

Hmm, this is what I mean by special reserve:

.

This is the Single Barrel:

.

Anyway, the special reserve is very nice imo. I might give the other one a try too in the near future.

I don't think we have that one in the States. There is also a barrel strength one in the Japanese market. That one I've had, its phenomenal.

That would explain it.. The barrel strength sounds interesting..

Tried the Elijah Craig 12 y/o yesterday. First thing that struck me was the fact that it is quite strong. With the 94 proof it is really not for the faint hearted imo. Quite liked it, but I prefer a bit more smoothness to be honest.

^^ I blew through a bottle of EC 12, kind of wanting to be done with it and move on to something I would like better. Then I got Bulleitt, and missed EC terribly. Bulleitt just about put me off bourbon altogether for a time.

Bulliet isn't very good. I just picked up a bottle of Michter's bourbon, pretty good stuff.

Try Corner Creek. Genuine Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey - comes in a wine bottle - around $30. Unique!
Bourbon for scotch drinkers is how I would describe it.
