Bourbon.

    This is true, but in the case of Basil Hayden's it is only 80 proof so cutting it is not necessary. With a stronger bourbon, such as Booker's, I'll take it with a cube or two to help open it up a bit and bring it down to a lower proof.

    Absolutely not. As the other guy said-- they are different animals. I am honestly not really a scotch fan, though once and a while I will have a glass. The peat flavor is something I really dislike. Frankly I prefer bourbon or triple distilled Irish whiskey.
    Not trying to convert you, just spreading the love -- try Dalwhinnie sometimes.

    You really can't go wrong with anything from Buffalo Trace's higher-end offerings in their Antique Collection. At home I've got a bottle of William Larue Weller (wheated bourbon), Eagle Rare 17 yr (bourbon), George T. Stagg (fucking monster bourbon at 147 barrel proof), and Thomas H. Handy (rye). You can identify them by the tall, narrow clear glass bottle. Anything in one of those bottles is pretty much guaranteed to be good, but I drink them less often than my everyday Forrester, Weller, or Ancient Age.

    aight well anyway i downed some neat Makers today

    then i had some dewar's white label, which cost the same. honestly guys, it's not even debatable. the scotch is better


    Dewar's is just really fucking good for the price. It beats every similarly priced liquor.

    It's like throwing down dynamite in rock-paper-scissors.

    I like Wild Turkey (maybe it's the high alcohol content), but I like most bourbon. I'm less picky with bourbon that I am with sippers like Scotch and Tequilia. I prefer bourbon on the rocks or mixed as a Manhattan or a Pimlico (mulled mint, simple syrup and OJ).

    Ice also changes the temp of the drink. It's not the water that's the problem.

    Funny, I don't really like Dewar's White Label either. Nor Johnny Walker Red. I'm not a single malt snob - well, okay, maybe I am, but there are inexpensive blended scotches that I like a lot. Teacher's is great stuff, and I think Ballantine's is a terrific value and very drinkable. Famous Grouse, while a bit over-caramelized, is decent too. I have a lot of respect for Ballantines, especially their older offerings. Their 17 year old blend, most commonly seen in duty free shops for about $50, is better than JW Blue Label as far as I'm concerned - and much less expensive.

    Good recommendation. I think my dislike of Scotch is from drinking a large amount of low quality stuff in college. I think if I sat down and enjoyed some decent stuff I would grow to appreciate it. My feelings about Irish whiskey come from taking a trip to Ireland and visiting Bushmills and really sampling some high quality whiskey.

    I always have Maker's Mark on hand for whiskey sours (my favorite drink) and then will have some Blantons to drink on the rocks.

    That's my favorite part! And something I actually look for. The singles I've loved the most are all very medicinal and peaty. I always have a south Islay around.
