I'm not a big fan of Hudson because of their 375ml bottles at 750ml prices. That being said, their rye and baby bourbon are pretty good. Their four grain is a cool product, but I think it needs a little more time in the barrel to mellow.

I think I can agree with you that I'd rather be getting 750 ml for $50 as opposed to 375 ml, but to me, the whiskey makes it worth the higher price. Is it worth $100 for 750 ml? Probably not, but it has a certain novelty to it given its origin, and is made in far smaller batches than most other bourbons, so I personally don't mind the price.

I agree with you for the most part. I would happily pay $75 - 80 for a 750. I think my problem is that I don't like buying 375s.

Couldn't agree more. Right now, the Hudson is the only 375 ml that I have in my entire stock!! I am hoping there was some brilliant MBA behind this who applied the same logic to bourbon as is sometimes applied to stock splits, but I fear I may be wrong.

Have you tried the Hudson New York whiskey or Single Malt?

you seem to have tried all the productsof the company, how does their rum rank compared to other rums? the lack of age on the bottle and the price make me critical.

I haven't had the NY Whisky, its my understanding that the mashbill changes every year (or every batch). Ought to be interesting, but no real way to know what you are drinking.

Single Malt I had at a tasting, although I don't remember what batch. It tasted pretty young, i.e. a lot of rough edges. The company recommends adding water and that helps. It smelled and tasted like someone mixed a very floral scotch (Rosebank, Mortlach) with a sweet bourbon (Woodford, Knob). Pretty interesting, and again, had it been in a 750 I would have purchased it, but I didn't think it was worth what they were asking.

Tried the rum as well. I am not at much of a rum aficionado as whiskey/whisky, but I thought the rum was pretty good. Its smokier than most rums, the only other ones I've had with the same smoke were Haitian rums. Its a little harsh, indicative of a young drink. I believe that its matured in charred oak barrels , just like bourbon. I didn't buy it at the tasting, but because of its uniqueness I do plan on getting one eventually, despite the size.

For God's sake why do I keep reading this thread? I have easily more bottles of bourbon than any other spirit, and more than most of them combined, and yet, I read this thread, and go, hmmm...maybe I should stop by Specs and see if they have a bottle that truly completes my life.

I have to admit, as far as these things go - they're cheaper than perfume and no one doubts my masculinity when they see a herd of bourbon bottles. hmm.

I have actually never seen the rum, so curious as to what others who have might think.

It would appear that Gnatty (aka Lucky Dog!) has bought all their production. Have not been able to find a bottle in Houston, and I don't spend enough with any one store to get on their list.

It might not be widely available in Houston yet, fear not.

Well...I was drinking Buffalo Creek last night and thought...this is quite good. Good enough for the most part - how much better could Stagg, et al, be?

Then I recalled Blanton's. I gave a bottle to a friend who helped us move, and he's a big bourbon drinker. He poured me a glass and then one for himself, and it was memorably good: the kind of good you don't really want to talk about for the first minute or so.

That said, I'll continue to patrol my upper-end liquor stores.

Blantons is great bourbon, its smooth, a little sweet, a little floral, a little oaky, a little spicy. Very well rounded. Stagg is a beast. Chocolaty sweet, mouth coating, hugely oaky. It like bourbon at full volume, incomparable to most anything else.
