Wow that's not a very good deal. Go get firsts for $280...

That's straight from AE. The shoes were $230 + all the other stuff.

The hodgepodge of the different sized broguing nastiness is only exacerbated but the horrendous rubber sole, particularly the in-real-life-view aka from the side. I vote burn or be burned.

Think of them as Custom Firsts. I'd keep them considering your weather. They look great!

I think they're awesome. If they sold them that way I'd buy them.

    Return them.
Those aren't even the nice rubber soles they use on the Executive Collection.

I don't understand, if they fit and look just as good as the ones with leather soles, then whats the problem? Besides, you live in the pacific northwest, it is almost as if the Gods have furtively assisted you with your purchase. Any shoe that won't be worn with a suit, I prefer a rubber sole if possible. Especially if nobody in your daily environment wears leather soles.

Seriously. Even assuming an additional charge of $20 for trees, plus $10 to $15 for shipping, plus let's say 7% tax, the $280 firsts with trees end up around $336 all in. For $36 more, you get a better and non-flawed shoe.

Of course, that assumes you could actually find Strand firsts on sale for $280. The Strand is a popular model and doesn't go on sale as often as other models. Full retail is usually around $300 to $330 before shipping, tax, and the additional purchase of trees.

I still don't think the seconds were a great deal in this case, though. Even if the rubber soles hadn't been there. Generally, I'd want to see a price reduction of closer to 30-50% off of firsts at full retail before seconds started looking like an attractive option. That is probably why I don't buy seconds, but to each his own.

    Sorry to hijack this thread.

I just got the exact same Strand in Walnut off ebay. Any recommendation for dress belts to go with it? Should I go for exact color match? What is the other closest color? Something not too expensive and available online please.

He could order them through JAB using a corporate discount and get 20% off.

Just an update to this... I called AE today and they apologized. Apparently the shoes were a custom order that were damaged during production, and the box wasn't marked appropriately such that they got sent to me as factory seconds rather than what they really are.

While I was arranging a return the rep said she could just credit me the difference such that the shoes ended up being just over $100, which seemed reasonable to me. I'm going to keep them and get also pair of firsts with leather soles for when the weather is nicer.

    Thanks all.

That's a pretty damn good deal for just over $100... You're lucky you live in Seattle...and not LA.

That's why they're called SECONDS. Every manufacturer has some items that just didn't turn out right and they dispose of them as 2nd's. They usually don't sell them under their brand name.I've never even seen an AE second so I guess they sell them in the poorer parts of the US.

AE is well know to have an almost endless supply of seconds.

Plus, many other companies have seconds, sometimes called SUBS that they sell under their brand name...
