I am definitely used to Chinese in-store customer service, which is very, very hands-on, and has the effect of chasing inexperienced westerners out the door. But I have gotten used to seeing it as a helpful thing, not a suspicious one. What offended me was being seen in such a suspicious light, and having that suspicion so clearly intimated.
It surprised me that it would exist at such an international luxury brand in such a flagship location.
