My wife and I may be going up to Boston for a weekend this fall. We may crash with friends, but also want to look into inexpensive places to stay in Cambridge or central Boston. Any recommendations?

what do you consider inexpensive? I like the Fairmont Copley but there are other much less expensive hotels throughout the area.

Max $200 a night, but hopefully less than that.

Back Bay Hilton is not bad, and may dip into your price range. Same with the Hyatt in Cambridge (that big ziggurat on the Charles). For that one, however, you'll need a car as it isn't too close to public transport.

There's a Marriott hotel at Kendall Square that's quite convenient to public transportation.

Try the Boston Park Plaza hotel. It's a very nice hotel with excellent restaurants nearby.

In Cambridge, try the Irving House - Bed & Breakfast. it will fit into your range and walking distance (7-8 mins) to Harvard Sq.
