I have worked at Target about six months now and am really beginning to tire of my current interpretations of the whole red/khaki uniform.

There are people here with much more style, and creative prowess (sp?) than myself and I just thought i'd ask what if any ideas or suggestions they might have as to how I might begin to feel better about what i have to wear 5 days a week.

Heh, I have the exact same problem. I wear a ruby colored polo 5 days a week for the doctors office I am at. It gets old fast and I hate not being able to dress like others around me!

I used to work at Best Buy a long time ago, so I definitely know how that is. Do they make you buy your own pants, as long as the color is right?

I would say a decent belt, shoes, and any accessories could make the overall look better. I've slimmed up a work shirt before and it looked much better (the store shirts were huge balloons), though be careful if they might pitch a fit about altering 'company property'. Slimmer pants may help as well.

As above, take what you're wearing now, get it tailored, and pair it with good matching accessories. It's not the clothes, it's how you wear them

I appreciate everything so far.

I failed to mention a hat I must wear, and a green apron also.

I have to wear a solid red shirt, no adornment (unless it can be covered by a nametag), and khaki pants. There are no specific guidelines as to how anything must fit, what brands you must wear which makes it fairly lenient I think.

Its just how do i add accesories? I've tried hard to think of tie options with a red shirt.
I've tried the hoodie with oxford + tie under it.

I've wanted to try a loose cardigan and slim chinos with boat shoes... I just don't want to be perceived as sloppy or unkempt .

basically i try to think and all i see is:

red top
khaki pants
black shoes

but I can't get myself out of a fairly tiny window of ideas.

I am sure white sneakers would work, but I just really don't know. I want to appear professional but also fun as that is an important role for my job.

In terms of non- work clothes I never have to think this much about it, I just get dressed and go and very rarely get bored with things. But with this I feel so cramped into someone elses look that I feel I don't have any say in things which kills any confidence i might have in regards to my looks.

paint your top half red and your bottom half khaki. Naked is the way to go.

Aw, Christ. You have a job, right? They pay you? Then maybe you should quit you're whining before Red comes over and puts his foot up your ass.

Seriously, kids these days....

^I seriously don't see how you are considering this to be whining, the man is simply seeking advice on how to add individuality to otherwise dull corporate attire.
- I also work in the glorious world of retail, and while not corporate, I have to wear similar white button ups with black slacks all day. What I have found to help is to wear comfortable shoes, a belt that I like, and whatever watches, etc. If you can wear items that you are fond of or that have special significance for you, all the better then, as I have found that to help myself. Honestly though I really doubt anyone would think your unkempt or dirty as long as the clothes you are wearing are clean. Last time I went into a target I got a headache from all the red paint and flourescent lighting; must be tough working there.

Seriously, cocky grown kids these days.

The job is likely boring, and he is trying to make the whole chore more interesting by taking interest in personal appearance in subtle ways. I honestly don't see the harm as long as it don't interfere with how he does his job..

The way your post reads you come off like a condescending ass.

I don't have anything too useful to add...I did find that decent dress shoes made my retail existence ten times more tolerable, but that was a comfort issue...I was fairly unconcerned with looking good at my boring retail jobs.

My advice is that if you can't really improve on the work outfits, try and branch out your wardrobe elsewhere, especially if you anticipate a different job in the future. The first thing that came to mind when I graduated college and took on a real job was "I wish I had thought ahead 6 months, and picked up something besides two dress shirts and an interview suit". I'm still playing catch-up.

Of course, it could be worse... one of my exes works for Burger King now, they actually gave her official black dress pants, Burger King tags on the inside and all. The thing is, they only have them in one length and she's on the short side, so she looks quite amusing.
