Hmm, those are cute shoes.
I'm just a full-time college student, who travels to the citcy alot (NYC).
So will do you think they'll be good for me going to school, and doing a little shopping in the city or just walking around with a bunch of buddies?

I love my Merrell wilderness boots for the winter (stitched sole, so you can replace the sole when they wear out, gore-tex liner, whole cut leather upper). They are a bit more than you want to spend, but I've seen them on sale for <$200.

I just bought a pair of black Sorels. I considered the Pac's but I can't really see much of a shape difference:

Plus, the Pac's have lower quality insulation, outsole, and uppers. The first pair is the upgraded $150 Caribou WL, with a wool liner (instead of felt) and a full-grain upper over cheap nubuck. Haven't received yet though.

To all those who own/have recently purchased made in china Sorels, is the quality really that bad? I was under the impression that after Sorel was bought out by Columbia and production was moved from Canada to China, the quality declined significantly. I'm wondering if they're still worth it, and like chronoaug I feel as though they might be too warm for Boston winters. Right now I'm waffling between the Caribous and Bean Boots...

I just bought a pair of Sorel Caribous today (in black) and they're fantastic. I know there are more stylish boots out there, but I'm sick of stylish boots that don't work (like my Redwings that disintegrated after two months!)

The Sorels are the real deal. They're big, and waterproof, and warm, and awesome. Leave some shoes at the office, and take these outside when it comes to rocking snow and slush. You will laugh at puddles.

It saddens me that they're no longer made in Canada, but that being said, the MiC ones that I have seem to be of a good quality. Not sure where the differences lie.

Just got a pair of these. They're not too bad for $60.

These don't seem half bad for walking around town.

Tretorns are $42 now. I might pick up a pair as my go to rainboot if I ever have to go somewhere rainy. I'm curious to see fit pics for these.

+1 LL Bean Ducks

...or, while you're at LL Bean, get Katahdin Boots (Poor man's IR), then add some leather waterproofer like Sno Seal or whatever. For 150, who cares if you trash 'em and they might even turn out looking cool like in some of the threads on here.

... or, as another poor man's Iron Ranger, you could do something like http://www.wwiiimpressions.com/images/200136profile.JPG with similar leather treatment. Again, for 150, it'd be an interesting experiment and you wouldn't be walking around with extra-thick condoms on your dogs.

The Katahdins are up to 160 now, and that's what you're always going to pay. Decent boots, but the Iron Ranger can be had on sale for another 10 bucks or so, so there's really no need to settle for the poor man's alternative. IR's are a bit chunkier than the Katahdin, but that's not a huge deal with this type of boot.
