I just received my second pair of kudu boots and wanted to get thoughts on gouges on the toe. Is this considered normal/natural for this leather? The leather on my other pair is almost flawless The tannery/factory did a fantastic job treating the hide, and scars pretty much blend in. I was expecting scars and scratches on the hide, but these gouges are a surprise. Am I over reacting or this due to poor craftsmanship?

I certainly think this should have been picked up in quality control and they would have sold them on their eBay shop (which has over 100 pairs listed) that only sells their seconds. The discounts are typically 20-40%. Their shop is called shoemakers1866. Given your location and the hassle of returning I would ask them to discount them to their seconds price and offer you that partial refund. Ask them on the chat function on their website.

If that's the Jamaica kudu from CF Stead, I understand that to be an embossed kudu so that is not normal. I think you have every right to be disappointed in the craftsmanship here.

I picked up a chukka in this leather and mine definitely looked nothing like that. Also looks abnormal for kudu, I'd be worry of that tearing especially at the toe

As you are not buying "seconds", I would return that pair and ask for an exchange. I own the Sons of Henrey Ambly chukka boots in the same Jamaica Kudu and they are far from yours, as you can see in the next image.

I think it’s unusual on a Jamaica kudu hide but not unbelievable. I think it’s possibly more poor clicking in placing that particular scar at the toe. I’d probably accept it but Jamaica kudu tends to be used on dressier boots as opposed to the usual rugged nature of kudu hides on boots and shoes.

Thanks Crafty. I tend to be accepting of flaws especially natural ones like shell color variations and scars on hides sourced from wild animals. Wasn't sure what to make of this, so wanted to get input from this community. I've contacted the brand owner to get his thoughts.

It’s not great, but not mega atrocious… I’d be disappointed too to be fair. I’ve a few Jamaica kudu and my impression was the hides with least imperfections were chosen to emboss.

This is a hard pass & return unless you bought them as seconds. I own couple of pairs or kudu boots and shoes from gg & Enzo etc. And never had any issues like this etc. Hope this helps simply stating my opinion & what I would personally do.
