If you have such questions, Jesper from Shoegazing or Justin Fitzpatrick have far more knowledge on the matter! But that’s the short version. All the endangered species are heavily regulated.

I think the concern with endangered leathers broadly is that proliferation of use may drive up demand beyond what can be sourced ethically and legally.

Raises the question of whether it is better to prohibit the class of conduct weighed against the harm in not allowing it. I don't think there is an answer that is going to satisfy everyone and it will likely always be decisive like if dog leather ever took off.

That said, it is an interesting leather like hippo leather.

It’s a conundrum. Once it becomes illegal the poachers arrive and decimate the herds. They now come in helicopters with military grade automatic weapons. Killing the Guards also.
