How do define designer names?

Excellent question. I suppose my definition would be a company who follows trends and is more defined by its name than by traditional style and quality. Perhaps this is an unfair assessment on my part.

CHEANEY TIGER MOTH R
Black cherry goatskin
Last 142
Dainite sole (genuine)

In terms of general appearance these boots get a big thumbs up; the styling is very nice.

However, closer inspection revealed a number of minor imperfections in finish, including the odd loose thread, a burred edge on the heel stack that should have been cleaned up, and a stretched look on the toe cap punching. In this respect they do not compare favourably with the similarly priced Cheaney Mallory I received a few weeks ago, nor similarly priced Church’s products in my collection.

The black cherry goat skin is very attractive and quite soft; not sure how it will fare over time.
The paratrooper lacing was just an eyesore to me and had to be replaced with something more conventional.

Despite having a total of eleven eyelets and ski hooks, the leg is not that high, as this comparison with the MTO ten eyelet Wm Lennon 78PTC shows. One row of eyelets probably could have been dispensed with, or the leg could have been made higher. High boots aren't easy to come by, so I'd take that option.

The sheepskin lining is very comfortable in itself but may prove problematic in terms of fit and longevity. The thickness of the lining renders the wearing of thick socks impossible for me. This matter will be assessed more thoroughly as time goes on.

I tried to get my hands on a conventional leather-lined pair in copper goat but they were removed from the website when I returned to make the purchase, and Cheaney have not responded to my enquiries in relation to them.

With the above in mind I’m glad they were on sale, as I do not believe they are worth the full price of £415 excluding VAT. The discounted price of >£100 less would have been more realistic as a full retail price. Perhaps this is reflected in the fact that they had to be discounted in order to sell. The full EU price is an eye-watering €670... I know that includes VAT, but still, WTF?

The finishing of my Tiger Moths does not compare favourably with the $245 Meermin Balmoral boot (centre) or ca. £220 Lennon MTO 78PTC (right).

Interesting report. The BC goat is pretty cool.

Nice! How is their shell breaking in?

The leather is a little stiff but they're breaking in nicely. I polished them the other day for the first time and they came out pretty good, they are one of my favorite pairs of boots.
