My Alden PCT’s got a little roughed up after a day of running up and down the Zugspitze Alps today.

Hello ha_er,

yes, a hiking boot. An "AKU Skyward Air 8000" with GoreTex and an vibram cleated cemented rubber sole. The upper is made of dark blue suede and cloth, like tweed. The boot was lying in a dusty shoe box in the basement and no one seemed to own it. It fits me well, so I took it. Ideal in snow and mud when hiking in the alps in winter. I would not wear it with a suit though ;-).

Interesting is, that these manufacturers of technical, or special, hiking and outdoor footwear, mostly boots, are European manufacturers with high-quality materials and skilled employees. These cemented technical shoes and boots can go up to 500€ and more, because of the technical specifications of the materials. The husband of my mother told me, that hiking and mountaineering boots for extremly low temperatures need special isolations of the outsole and shaft to avoid freezing of the feed when sinking into the snow at -10° Celsius and colder. Not many manufacturers can produce light, flexible and yet robust, long-living and technically appropriate shoes and boots for such environments. These manufaturers also offer refurbishment services to repair and resole these shoes and boots, even with cemented outsoles.

Our goodyear-welted dress boots would probably be completely out of their element in such harsh environments in the mountains.

Best regards

Pascal

Probably not as performing as specifically technical footwear, but far more stylish for sure.
