Argh! And OMG! I hoped men in Berlin might be better dressed - shoewise than here in England. Clearly not😳
Hello shoefan57,

I was surprised when visiting London for an ESG & sustainability conference for the financial industry that I as a German was better dressed than the English men! With all the excellent shoe makers from Northhampton and Saville Row just a few stops with the subway around the corner I was surprised why they asked me at the end of the conference for my tailor and cobbler.

Alright, I might have taken it to far with the 3 suits for 3 conference days and matching dress derbies from Heinrich-Dinkelacker. But all still fitted in one suit case, which our partners were suprised when I told them ;-).

Hence even in London no one seems to care much about their outfit, in particular clean and polished shoes, but still more than here in Frankfurt.

Enjoy your weekend and best regards

I think it’s ok for people to prioritise things other than their outfit. Many of my friends think I’m insane for spending so much money on boots and shoes, and to be honest, I can’t really argue with them. Each to their own.

Perhaps, and I’m proud to be a heretic. I share all of your passion for nice footwear, but I don’t come on here to put down those that don’t.

It seems an ironical comment to me. Nobody's putting down anybody.

Of course everybody has his own priorities and preferences, but it's also clear that we are here for discussing and praising our beloved shoes and boots.

Ah, the classic irony defence 🤔 Maybe it was so subtly disguised as smug snobbery that I missed the irony.

Anyway,

I like to dress up as I feel better "suited and booted" ;-). Furthermore, it is my professional attitude to look professionally, not only to act. I am also representing my consulting company when working at the client, with him/her in his/her offices, or do networking for client acquisition at conferences. So far I only received complements for dressing up in a full suit, usually a three-piece-suit with a matching or odd vest, a tie, pocket squares and polished dress shoes or boots. Also a good smart casual look with a sports jacket or blazer, pocket square, chinos or jeans and polished derbies or boots gets me complements and the smiles of well-dressed and good looking women in the city :).

The nicest compliment was a few days before Christmas in the subway, when I waited for the next stop to exit. I wore my classic covered coat made of camel hair and with a burgundy collar. An old lady said that it looks as good as she liked it with her old husband. Everyone around was similing and nodding. I said thanks for the complement, wished her a nice evening, and exited the subway station on my way home.

Hence if one actually wears the high-quality, and expensive, wardrobe it makes a difference. I like it because it feels good in business and privately.

Also a 300-500€ pair of goodyear welted dress shoes is doing it. A 1250-2000€ pair of dress shoes from Edward Green, Garciano & Girling, John Loob etc is a real luxury, similar to high-end watches.

Hence even when building a high-quality wardrobe one takes care off on can be more or less rational. Do I need 28 pairs of goddyear welted dress shoes? No, but I rotate and wear them regularly, they are taken care off, so they will last a lifetime. Each year 3 new pairs of 100-150€ each would probabyl be almost similarly expensive over a lifetime.

Enjoy your weekend and best regards

A very detailed and informative post, but just comes across as boastful unfortunately. I come on here simply to look at cool pairs of boots, not to read this kind of conceited nonsense. I’m sure it’s written with the best intentions, so apologies for my directness - just fed up with the direction of this thread of late.

Hello Fenners81,

alright, I also appreciate well made and good looking boots, as everybody else here.

And I mean it that I think one ought to dress well for the occassion, in particular if one represents a company in a professional context. Dirty and scruffy shoes, or wrinkled shirts are a no go in my opinion even in nowadays relaxed environment. Even to a wedding recently guest came in shorts, sandals and t-shirt, even though the invitation said to "dress appropriately". I found that completely ignorant of the guests not to even try to dress up for the occassion of a summer wedding of friends of the family. I would have kicked the guests out honestly. If that is now boastful, than that it is.

In Germany almost every man easily is willing to spend a fortune on a sports car, ideally a Porsche, but no more than 200€ on a pair of dress shoes. An article in the FAZ said that according to a survey among 1000 representative adult males only a fraction, and scaled up the population about 20.000, were willing to spend more than 200€ for a pair of shoes. That is what it is. We are thus among those 20.000 few.

Enjoy your boots and best regards

For me it is for sure a balance. I enjoy dressing well, and must admit I overdo it with boots. It’s just a matter of fact that most people in this world, in terms of personal style, are not even in the same universe as most of us here on styleforum. That said, I too shake my head when members lambast those not as passionate as we are. Oh well…what are you gonna do.
