Boot fit question

When fitting a boot like the Alden Indy boot, if you are between sizes is it best to go with the narrower one in the hopes and expectation that it will stretch, or go wider and have a little extra room. Initially the wider feels more comfortable from the start, but it also feels a touch sloppy in the forefoot (E width). The other (D width) feels just a hair snug in the forefoot, but certainly wearable for an extended period of time without any real discomfort.

I'm sort of thinking that the narrower one will stretch a bit, but the wider one will always be a little wide. Does that make sense?

Personally, I go slimmer if I can still wear them comfortably.

Then again, a wider boot can be tightened up a bit by adding an insole.

Fit really is personal preference for shoes. However, I think it's best to go with what fits the most snugly at least from a support and long term walking comfort perspective. Leather tends to stretch enough if it's reasonably snug, but more important for me is that the heel is perfect and i don't have any slippage. Walking more than a few blocks with loose heels for any shoe just gets uncomfortable.
