As I vaguely understand, there are some Indian religious festivals that practice "hook-swinging" whereby the people are hung by hooks and swing about. I think it was banned under the British though.

I'm actually sort of surprised that this hanging thing is legal.

Don't some Catholics still practice self-flagellation?

A lot of canonized saints did . NOTso as to mutilate their bodies though. Differing reasons but mostly to atone for their sins or those of others.

You need to stop reading Dan Brown books.

I'm proud to say I've never read a Dan Brown book.

Actually, it's not a preposterous question. It goes too far to say that a lot of Catholics do it, but some do, for instance, in the Philippines.

But of course Shia pilgrims are much more committed to the practice.

I found this festival in Spain, Guardia Sanframondi, that seems to preserve self-flagellation: [IMG] [IMG]

As I read, it was also to enter into an ecstatic state which some of those saints were so keen on. Violent "transcendence" seemed to have been a recurrent theme in traditional Catholicism.

No, it's not a preposterous question. But, as you note, it goes too far to say a lot of Catholics do it. You could probably find a small percentage of any religion that practices self-flagellation for one reason or another.

My question never implied that "a lot of Catholics" practice it. I noted "some Catholics" which suggests at least, a group of people.

I find Catholicism fascinating for those sorts of (voluntary) violent acts of transcendence, among other things.
