Tattoos are just a poor man's way of investing in art

What pieces/artists comprise your art collection?[IMG]

Can someone explain to me why people do this?

Some see at a way of taking their bodies back from nature and making them their own. Not unlike what others here have already mentioned.

These guys are boy scouts compared to the people who voluntarily amputate a limb.

Please tell me you made this up.

I've heard of people having sterilized gunshot wounds inflicted as well.

There are people who obsess over which limb they want to be amputated and it has to be amputated a particular length and angle, it's all very specific. They will freeze their legs or whatever, so when they are admitted to the hospital, the doctor has no choice but to cut off the "offending" limb.

I don't mind body modifications; however, like any "fetish" it can be carried to extreme measures as per your posted pictures.

No doubt, those S&M Disney riders derive some sort of sexual pleasure from hanging like that.

Several years back a man was found dead in a Tijuana hotel room from complications (gangrene I think ) resulting from the amputation of one of his legs. i think the San Diego police got involved and it was a real puzzler at first. Whats this american guy from the midwest somewhere doing down here? Where did his freshly removed leg go? etc. Turns out he had decided to realize a lifelong dream (I think he was late middle age) of having one of his legs removed. As you might expect, practicing stateside Drs told him to fuck off so he got a grossly alcoholic "former" dr to do the deed in a TJ hotel. There is an actual scientific name for this desire. As you might have guessed it is quite rare.

If even if you don't suspect, as some of us do, that the more extreme practices of adornment express corporeal loathing, I think it's fair to say that there's also a good bit of wanting to shock other people/violate social norms and a whole theme about enduring and transcending pain. BTW, I think similar issues about corporeal loathing and treating oneself as an object rather than as a natural being could be raised about plastic surgery, which is perhaps the other end of the continuum from the photos Z posted here.

Personally, I find most of the pictures very hard to look at, and I think that the current rage for piercings, tats, plastic surgery etc. has to be understood in terms of contemporary culture. In American culture (at least), we have pretty disordered relations to the fact and the ways that we're embodied.

As I vaguely understand, there are some Indian religious festivals that practice "hook-swinging" whereby the people are hung by hooks and swing about. I think it was banned under the British though.
