Humans have ornamented and adorned themselves for thousands of years. It just seems to be in our nature.

I dunno, I don't really find it all that weird. Pretty much everyone wants to alter their body to some degree to conform with some aesthetic ideal. Splitting your tongue is really no different from getting breast implants, except that the aesthetic involved is different. Granted, I may not be attracted to the specific aesthetic involved there, but there are plenty of strange aesthetic ideals out there that I don't identify with, so I don't stress about it.

Note that I'm not saying the results aren't creepy as hell--just that I don't find the impulse all that strange, even if I don't really find any particular value in the aesthetic involved.

ZJ, I get the impression that you have rather delicate sensibilities.

It would be funny if there was a thread on a BM/Tattoo site that linked a G&G/Lobb/EG shoe thread here and asked "can someone explain why anyone would spend $1000 on a pair of shoes"

Tattoos are just a poor man's way of investing in art

Is that supposed to be an insult? I honestly can't tell, since it doesn't work as one unless you think "poor" is inherently derogatory.

Also, a good tat is far from cheap.
