What do you guys think of boater hats? I noticed that the blog that AB posted earlier has a post on them.

I find them charming although I have never owned one.

You can greatly amend the boater by the choice of band. I'd agree that chorse's pic is a little to 1915 boardwalk for most. But a narrower ban in a more neutral or at leat singular band can help a great deal.

A straw panama is likely an easier choice for most, however. I always found the boater fails if the suit isn't paired with what, by today's standards, might be rather formal for summer wear on the boardwalk.

I tend to think these and gondolier hats are the hardest to pull off of the various summer straw hats.

I see a few people wearing them on the river in summer every year. In that context, they're a fun bit of whimsy and look good. Other contexts? Not convinced, and a panama would usually be a better choice I think.

This is what I think of, when I see one.

Truth be told, I own one just like the one in the photo, but I have never worn it. I own several other hats including a black homburg, but this one seems a step too far. Maybe toning down the band would help, but even then.....

Would love to wear one but also worry about how it would be perceived.

...perhaps one day...

I think I'm going to get something like this (in a sand color)

All are from J.J. Hat Center, which has been recommended on here. Every spring I realize I want one, and have never succumbed. This will be the year, I think.

JJHC is a great store. I've been there a couple of times and love to visit the place. Over the summer I saw someone at a friend's wedding in a pouder grayish hat that looked phenominal. I asked him about it. He said he bought it 35 years ago at JJHC.
