eey, nice photo! that chap is pretty cool. a little flabby, but then again, he seems not to give a s**it!

I guess big part of this depends on the pants. I definitely can't see the socks working with jeans. But with some marginally more refined pants, why not..

Wearing sock with topsiders is like wearing an undershirt beneath a Hawaiian shirt--it can be done, but its not ideal.

BTW, real boat shoes, meaning ones that are made with leather that the manufacturer expects will get wet (like Sperry Topsiders), are less likely to get ruined or smelly from sweat. In fact, they often have drainage holes in them, which helps your foot breathe. If you sweat in them, you can hose them out and leave them outside to dry and they'll be fine in an hour or two. I don't even think you need the powder.

You have to war them with socks. No question. See blogpost on Invisible Socks

So correct. Sperrys are the definite shoes to be worn without socks. I saw someone in the office this week getting away with Wall Street's more casual, fratty atmosphere on summer Fridays on the trading floor with very playful, bright socks and classic Sperrys ... but the socks were only a bow to office standards, not by choice. They're made to be lived in, the leather is pliable and of such quality that you're worse off wearing socks than not.

Boat shoes are only to be worn without socks. Deal with the olfactory consequences.
