I just checked out the navy Authentic Original topsiders and they have a rubber panel stitched to the back with a Sperry logo on it. WTF? The other colors have a leather panel with no logo, and it looks like it is covering exposed stitching and thus wouldn't be a good idea to remove it.

They don't go well with too much stuff. They don't look too good paired with jeans, and god forbid wearing them with something that isn't absolutely casual.

eg. of a laceless boat shoe-

I don't ascribe to your philosophy that a function of a garment that you are not utilizing somehow revokes that piece of clothing's reason for being worn. Sometimes it just looks cool and it having a detail that actually has a historical function adds authenticity that I for one enjoy.

this is correct. try wearing your loafers on a boat and the owner will toss you overboard. not only do these shoes provide traction, they keep you from ruining the deck of the boat with scuffs and scratches. as far as function, i also wear button down collars and rarely play polo, and i wear my trench coat outside of my WWI trench very often as well. so i guess i'm a triple offender. i have a boat but i often wear boat shoes when i'm not on the water as well. i think it has a lot more to do with just liking the aesthetic, although they do make more sense when you live near the water. i dont think you should wear clothes where form is completely counterintuitive to function, but only wearing clothes on the merits of function seems a little silly in this day and age.

^I think dark brown and tan were both around in the beginning.

To reply to the OP, I'm in high school and wear boat shoes a lot. My family doesn't own a boat, but a lot of our friends do, and I sail pretty frequently in the summer.
