The old track guys I know just drive their M3s and M5s on the track. When they have to drive a rental car, it's kind of a joke, but I do agree with you that most high performance cars are way more car than most people can handle.

I have a friend who had a 'hot' Ford Escort Cosworth. Now that was quick.

new teaser of this car; looks like it's going to have a pair of body-colored kidney grilles, the exact same wheel design they used all the way through testing (kind of rare they do that, actually) and then a typical M-tech front apron with the two slashes adjacent, probably to break up the massive size of the front apron in relation to the rest of the fascia.

That's about the only good looking thing on the exterior of that car.

This thing is going to be a little monster. Interestingly, they've omitted the DCT as an option and will be only offering the car with a six-speed manual. The official story is that they couldn't develop the DCT for the car in time, but the rumor is that BMW simply wants to ensure that the fastest M3 (with DCT) remains faster than the fastest 1M. This implies the 1M will give the manual-equipped an M3 a run for the money in simple performance numbers.

I think this is a parts bin special developed at the last minute, hence no DCT. Nothing wrong with that though. The next gen 1M will probably have more specialized parts. Rumor is that the next one will have a turbocharged 4-pot.

The lack of SMG or auto versions really hurt Z4M sales, at least in the US. I think we'll see similar small sales numbers for the 1M...

I would have guessed the quirky looks, hard ride, and impracticality of a hard-top 2-seater limit the Z4M's sales. In any case, I don't think BMW is expecting to sell many 1Ms.

This is what I hear, too--and that the next M3 will come with a twin-turbo'ed version of the N55.

I agree that this isn't going to be a huge seller, but for all the reasons that make it more interesting to me.
