That's not a smoking jacket.

I have a midnight blue velvet peak lapel sportcoat that I got at Express Men for about $39.

p.s. if you're a size 40, it's for sale for $599.

That's a velvet dinner jacket.

A smoking jacket would look more like this...

You might post in WTB. I know there are a few people on here with heavy access to discounted Tom Ford stuff. You might be able to get that exact jacket, although it would probably be closer to a grand.

In some countries, aren't a smoking jacket and a dinner jacket defined as the same thing? Perhaps that's the source of some of the confusion?

OP: I'd check out our affiliate eHaberdasher, they sometimes get some really interesting odd formal jackets.

Yeah Germany and some of the other European countries.

It's not that rare an item (M B velvet dinner jacket), most contemporary clothing manufacturers have one in their range at some time or other. Ebay or vintage shops often have them as well.

Just out of curiousity, under what circumstances would one wear a dinner jacket or a smoking jacket? I've never seen a social situation that would ever call for one.

Well, first of all, in Germany and other countries where the DJ and SJ are considered the same thing, they are both equal to what we in the states would consider a DJ. A DJ is just the more formal term to refer to a tux jacket. Sometimes people will wear tux jackets in odd materials/colors other than the trousers. For those who must attend black tie affairs frequently it keeps things interesting.
