UNPOPULAR OPINION
i know
but replacing them with any other shirt colour will always upgrade the outfit
blue is dull as a background
the stronger the blue, the cheaper the outfit
it makes everything less harmonious

white works better with navy, grey, brown, rust, mustard, green, olive, etc. suits
it sets a better canvas for the tie

with sportcoats, choosing a white or tonal shirt colour is the best choice without a tie
a white shirt highlights the jacket/tie combination
a blue shirt absorbs the other colours and complicates coordination

the only two outfits in which a blue shirt looks "good" with tailoring are:
navy suit
menswear uniforms (grey flannel trousers/beige khakis, navy blazer)
and still, other shirt colour would always be better

blue/white stripped shirts are ok
(as long as blue is not the dominant colour)

Nah, blue works perfectly fine - probably the most versatile color there is.

(But I agree that a certain shade of dark blue just looks incredible cheap, and bring back horrible memories from the mid/late 90s)

Unpopular opinion for a reason, you should probably also keep the complexion of the wearer in mind. As a pale blonde Scandinavian, I do well avoiding white shirts for a big part of the year.

Pay attention to this fella ^^ he knows!

The ‘white shirt only’ business looks great if you’re Cary Grant with mahogany skin but for we blondies it washes us out and blue shirts in various shades, patterns and textures work MUCH better for most outfits.

White shirts make my already ruddy complexion even pinker, so while I own a handful of them they’re permanently relegated to the elephant graveyard that is the back of my wardrobe. Blue/white stripes are my personal favourite, but I think pretty much any shade of blue but gaudy electric looks perfectly fine with tailoring.
