Blue or Black Grenadine Tie?

I've been working on beefing up my tie selection and want to cover the bases. The next one on my list is a Grenadine tie. Right now I have:

- Thin Black Tie, generic.
- Tweed Striped Tie
- Navy Polka Dot Tie
- Brown Knit Tie
- Chambray Tie

I don't wear many ties obviously :) So I'm thinking what else do I need? I've been impressed at the Kent Wangs so I'm thinking one of those but should go with Blue or Black? Which is the more versatile one? Can I use a darker blue in place of black?

Definitely dark blue / navy.

There’s an SF affinity for wearing black ties, even with brown jackets or summery outfits like Seersucker suits but It’s not for me. I got a black fina grenadine from Paul Winston Chipps when they were only $45 and wore it precisely once to a funeral. You could make it work I suppose but there are infinitely better options out there.

A dark blue will be much more versatile if you aren’t a daily tie wearer. With a dark suit and crisp white shirt and black shoes it will get you unimpeachably through weddings, funerals, bah mitzvaahs and job interviews.

Bantone,

Navy blue may be the most popular color but a midnight blue is very elegant.

When you are not sure ordering swatches is always a good idea.

Agree strongly on the points above. I was looking at the same decision, chose blue, and found it much more flexible and usable with my overall wardrobe than the black would be. In my case, with light, low contrast , coloring, blue worked much better with my complexion (although I don’t usually put much stock in color matching to complexion).

Or you can take Sam Hober’s suggestion and split the difference with midnight blue. Both Sam Hober and Kent Wang, SF vendors active on this board, have a lot of high quality, good value, options on all of these choices.

I ended up with a beautiful Midnight Blue tie from @Sam Hober. Thank you David!
