Dear Folks:

On Saturday, for the Jewish holiday, I was dressing very soberly: Blue blazer, white shirt with dark print tie, gray trousers.

In both the Javits and Penn Station, someone asked me, Do you work here?

Have we lost this uniform to those who wear it for a living?

EDIT: In the headline, the last + should be an =.

A pocketsquare would've ward off such insolent remarks.

I'd give the guy a good swift kick in the groin.

Oh, and no, I do not think your outfit is "rent-a-cop-ish", if and only if the fit is impeccable.

Pocketsquare was solid red cotton, which picked up the print in the tie.

Everything was well made and it fit me.

So I don't think these are the issues.

Also, both of the questioners were ladies, and the day was Yom Kippur, so physical violence, at least at that time, was not the best solution. Plus I was weak from hunger...

Are these old ladies? Sometimes they are so senile they'll ask a lamp-post for direction.

And did they just ask if you worked there? Maybe they thought you were some big-shot, all dressed up and all, who is with management.

I wouldn't worry. Some people see smart attire and assume authority, or at least think that you must be paid to dress that way.

LMAO Every now and then I inadvertently find myself dressing like either a geriatric guard at a museum or a mechanic on the clock.

I actually dropped off my wife's car the other day wearing jeans and a blue BD, and my mechanic jokingly said "all we need to do is sew your name patch on and you can jump back here and lend a hand". At which point I asked him why his kid's college bothers sending him the bills . . . why not just send them directly to me and cut out the middle man?

When I was 13, an old lady grabbed a grocery store flyer from my hand. Shocked, I didn't say anything. I was not wearing anything that could be mistaken for a uniform.

I wore a red polo and khakis to Target, and someone asked me if I worked there
