Blazer without shoulder padding?

Hi,

I am very new here, still trying to find my way around. I have very broad shoulders (5'7" and wear a 48R). When I wear a jacket with shoulder padding it borders on the ridiculous. I don't need the extra help and my shoulders are one of my best features which I'd like to showcase, not distort. I'd like to start wearing a blazer casually but I haven't seen any without shoulder pads.

Can anyone recommend a clothing line for me to check out or do I need to stick with other types of outerwear? Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken Southwick's jackets have little to no padding on most models, assuming you're after a more conservative look. Beyond that, most designers put out a variety of lines with different construction features.

the neopolitan styling of Kiton would do well. Very minimal padding with shoulders that have almost a sweater type fit.

Some Isaia and Belvest models also qualify as practically unpadded.

have any of you people who've replied above, read the OP's post at all? most guys seem to think they have broad shoulders, while in reality they have normal shoulders. not saying that you're lying, but just that i'm a bit skeptical, especially when you combine it with the following sentence:

first of all, 48R corresponds to chest width and sleeve/jacket length, not really shoulder width. secondly, 48 chest for a guy 5'7" ???? wtf??? i won't believe it until you show me a picture of you next to your strong man trophies.

Which is a problem for some of us. I'm not oversized in the shoulder area but I still need to ignore the chest measurement when buying a jacket. Depending on how he is built I could easily see him needing a 48. 48 is 20 or so inches of shoulder? A 40 is 18.5"?

BTW it's not really about working out. It's more about basic build. I don't really work out and still need a jacket bigger then my chest size.

20 inches of shoulder for someone 5'7" is very, very broad. a size 48 suit does not correspond to 18.5"/35" in the chest (don't know how you got that number). it corresponds to 48" in the chest + 2-4" of allowance, so 50"-52" in the suit chest, which, by ANY definition, is huge. many guys that have not worn a jacket that actually fits will say they need bigger jackets than their actual chest size. this is probably due to the ego thing again, or because the quality of suits they buy are at the bottom of the chain and QC is near nonexistent.

Stickonatree, I think Nicola's talking about shoulder measurements when he's saying 18.5". Not seeing where you're getting 35" from, though.

Giorgio Armani makes makes sport coats without shoulder pads. Steve Martin wore of few of them last night on SNL, I think he even wore an Emporio one.

Yes.

I can give my measurements for a comparison.

I'm 5'9 ish. 175cm.

My chest is about 38.5" round up to 39". I should fit a 40" jacket easily?

My shoulders are 47" around. Or almost 21" across the front. Will I still fit a 40? I have trouble with many Italian 52.

I'm not that big. I've known plenty of guys with broader backs/shoulders.

it seems like you should fit a 40 easily, yes, curious that you don't fit the italian 52. shoulder measurements are done from the back, bone to bone (top part sticking up from your shoulder blade). you should post a picture of you with your current size and we can see if it really is the right size.
