Blarg Alert: Exceeded My Credit Limit - What To Expect?

OK so I'm a mere 21 years old and recently got my first credit card. I really don't need it, but it's convenient and I see it as a way to build credit. However, I really wasn't keeping a close enough eye on my balance and I've exceeded my credit limit (on a Visa).

Will this hurt my credit? Also, should I expect a huge overdraft fee?

No, it won't hurt your credit, unless you refuse to pay.

Yes, there will be an overdraft fee, usually $29-$35. When you get this, call them and plead ignorance. They might give you a first time courtesy waiver.

I'd log on their website and do a quick payment directly from your checking account if I were you.

OK, sounds great. I'll probably indeed plead ignorance because it actually occurred because I had set up a bill pay system via my credit card and they definitely billed me almost two weeks early (I don't buy anything unless I actually have the money for it, so I pretty much max my card out).

Thanks. I'm quite relieved.

Yeah, you should be fine. But in free associating about nightmare scenarios we might be able to scare you with, I'm recalling the classic WKRP In Cincinnati episode (which you probably have to be older than 21 to remember

) where Dr. Johnny Fever is convinced the phone cops are coming for him.

Best WKRP episode, ever.

Johnny, hearing all the sirens: It's the phone company. They know what I did here today.
Venus: What are you talking about?
Johnny: They're coming to get me, man!
Venus: That's paranoia, man!
Johnny: Wake up, sucker, this is the phone company we're talking about! They see everything, they know everything, they got their own covert police force! I'm probably wired for sound right now! I gotta get out of here!
Venus: Johnny!
Johnny: Don't use my name!!

Other personal favorite, the turkey giveaway episode.

Oh, yes, Bailey, way hotter than Jennifer.

And about your card, you should be fine. Just don't miss payments.

Travis was a lucky SOB.

I learned about atoms and protons... in that episode where Venus gives a chemistry lesson to his nephew.
