If one has been awarded by a military association, is it ever proper to wear it with black tie unless the invitation reads as such?

According to the Black Tie Guide: "It is acceptable to wear military and civil decorations at state and other prestigious ceremonial functions providing the invitation states White Tie, Decorations (Evening Dress, Decorations in UK and Australia) or Black Tie, Decorations (Dinner Jacket, Decorations). Other variations of these phrases - such as the Black Tie, Long Dresses - Decorations are equally acceptable".

I'm guessing the answer is no, excepting an invitation to a state function, etc.

There are miniature versions of standard military awards, yes. I was asking more in reference to neck awards. Thanks all for the help.

I'm not aware of the formal rules.
In Australia one wears one's full size decoraations with a lounge suit on Anzac Day.
State functions with white tie are minatures plus collarette (eg DSO or AC) and/or sash.
For black tie, events it will normally specify if minatures are to be worn.
The exception seems to be the Order of Australia lapel pin.

Those are grand.

I have the impression that they also have a specific dress version of those kinds as well.

Funnily enough I cleaned my miniatures and full size medals a few days ago while on a polishing frenzy.

I bought some new duraglit especially, to prevent the emergency, pencil eraser fiasco of a few years ago.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
