I am going to a big timer event--a gala-- and it is black tie.

I have a tux but I need to know if I must wear a tuxedo shirt or if a typical white dress shirt will do.

Thanks, Sartorial Sensais.

Yes, you need a tuxedo shirt.

Disagree. A white shirt is acceptable, as long as it straight collar (i.e., not button down). There is some dispute about whether oxford cloth is acceptable. To be safe, I would go broadcloth and french cuffs if possible.

PS, the tux suit I purchased is fairly "modern": duel vent, notch lapel, slender stripes on the legs, single button. I will not be wearing a cumberbund, may consider suspenders but doubtful.

I am hoping to get away with a white button down (and leave the jacket on!)

I would judge you.

Most people won't know the difference if it has a point collar and takes cuff links.

Mixed, so far. Brooks Brothers has slim fit tux shirts, but is the bib tux shirt ok without cumberbund? i.e., does the bib end up the belt line? Damn this shirt thing is stressing me out. I bought a sweet Ralph Lauren Purple Label black tie, too.

I might be able to get away with a white french cuff?

The RLPL tie is a bow tie, correct? Look, if this is an elegant "big timer" event why are you trying to "get away" with anything? Why not just dress properly? You already know you should. You're just trying to get permission to be inelegant. You might just get it, but not from those who know anything about the subject. Go here. Follow the instructions. It will all be great. Trust me.

I actually have a BBBF tuxedo shirt in oxford cloth with a button down collar lol.

I usually stick with my Zegna shirt though.
