Hey all. Apologies in advance if this topic has been covered. New to the site and couldn’t find this in a quick search.

Going to a wedding, and plan to wear a black velvet jacket and black velvet bow tie.

Looking for advice on the shirt. I have a white shirt that has black buttons. Would this look fine with the aforementioned jacket/tie for this event? Or, do I need to pony up the $ for a tuxedo shirt with button studs? Hoping to avoid this, as I don’t see much use of them after this event.

Thank you.

If the buttons are small and look like studs at a glance, that could work. A white hidden placket shirt w/o studs is an option too though.

Thank you for the help.

Another question that I thought of... are PL shoes too much or are they required? Was just planning on calfskin Oxfords or Derby’s.

I wear patent opera pumps because I can. Highly shined oxfords work as well, preferably with as little decoration as possible.

Honestly, you're not really wearing a tuxedo, so you don't really need to wear a formal shirt and you don't need to wear patent leather shoes. Well-polished oxfords will be fine. Having said that, a white shirt with black buttons just sounds like a bad idea on first principles. Mother-of-pearl (real or imitation) would be better in every regard.
