And while you can wear anthing with anything, I certainly wouldn't recommend it.

Bottom line: No.

No one with a mirror would wear a solid black odd jacket with a solid black pair of pants (at least I hope not). So, I suspect it is a pair of black pinstripe pants with a black and brown glen plaid jacket, and a dark brown shirt. I'm thinking a black tie with brown polka dots would pull the whole thing together.

You have a point there Sanguis.

Mid-brown is an absolute no-no , chocolate or very dark brown can work in a very few cases but I will not try that combo if you do not want to look like a SA.

I love brown myself but matching it with black is a sartorial crime.

I'm glad I read this. I was just 2nd guessing my husbands shirt choice because in the store we thought it looked like a slate gray. At home however, it was more like a light chocolate brown. I think you are right, it does look elegant, I think it's a modern take. I am confused as to why so many on this post have an aversion to black suits???

That's an unwritten style rule that you only wear black to black tie events or funerals. Of course, it's as usual with rules... This one exists mainly because it's very often a uniform.

As for your question Cwalker100, I'm tempted to say wear it with a dark navy or a dark green suit (not that there's many), but I'm not sure about the exact color (or rather, luminosity) of the shirt so I may be wrong.

i dont know, i would wear the reverse, dark brown suit, with black shirt, but the other way i cant picture it being pleasant looking.

i have no qualms against wearing a black suit
Black and brown are never a great combination... You can play with the block colour look .. Have a shade of brown and a shade of darker brown/chocolate together... That will work...
