It seems that finding black suede dress shoes is like searching for a unicorn. Does anyone have any suggestions ($500 and under) for black dress shoes? I'd actually really like some tassel loafers. Something like these C&J I found on ebay would be ideal

I'm not sure if it's the photography but those look washed out. Black suede shoes should be midnight black. The unavailability of well done black suede dress shoes on the market is part of what makes them interesting. By commodifying what should be a unique, natty item you would take the cachet out of them. For me, I would get E. Green or some such to make me a pair of lace ups in black suede.

Interesting topic for a thread.

It only now occurs to me that I rarely if ever see shoes done in black suede.

I have a pair of Aquascutum black suede oxfords, quite nice, but not very formal!

If you can't locate a pair in black suede, buy brown ones and have them dyed black by a good cobbler. Seriously. I've had Sky Valet in DC dye shoes -- both smooth calfskin and suede -- with great results IMO.
