black sportscoat/suit separate question

like many new members, thanks to this sf Ive been upping/growing my style by reading/researching around as much as possible.
Before I came across SF however, all i had in my closet was a black sportscoat (or suit separate jacket? still blurry on the difference?). I had gotten it tailored so it fits pretty nicely. However I've read that black is a big "sartorial no-no" unless one is attending a funeral. So is it doomed to stay buried in my closet (since i dont attend funerals often) or is there another way to dress it.

P.S I'm talking about solid black.

No it's fine. Obviously you liked it and felt comfortable in it, so wear it. Now that it's tailored and hopefully fits perfectly, you can pair it with some grey pants.

You might be able to use it to wear with jeans in the evening; I would avoid wearing it during the day-time.

+1. I have one too. Not too well tailored, so I will probably drop in one of these days. But I am 48, and I guess that I just don't frequent places where black is likely to be the right thing. Except, of course, increasingly, for natural reasons, funerals.

If someone asked me 'should I go buy a black sportscoat', I'd say no.

You have one, it fits well. When can you use it?

First of all, many young people do not seem aware that black suits are not conservative business dress. I don't think this matters here - we're talking a sportscoat allready.

Second, there is the argument that 'black is for evening', or 'black doesn't look good on most people'. For a suit, the former is indeed 'true' as a rule. But I'm not sure I agree with the 'obviously black looks bad on everyone in the daytime. 100 years ago, black certainly was a standard thing to wear for gentlemen in the daytime. I like black, but grudgingly accept that I do not, in fact, look great in black. But that is me - you may look great in black. My wife looks terrific in black - she has blue eyes, black hair, pale skin. Its one of her best colours.

So my answer would be:
- you could certainly wear it in the evenings
- if it looks good on you, I'd go ahead and wear it in the daytime in less-formal situations. This would be better as a dress-down sportsjacket then a 'near suit' worn with a tie etc.
- if you don't actually look good in black ... well stop buying it for one thing
