It is perfectly acceptable to wear black shoes with navy trousers. I remember that only a few years ago, people were asking the same question about brown shoes with navy trousers. The Italians led the way on that one - my point being that there are no real rules about these things. But I digress - black shoes with a navy suit, or trousers, is still seen as more appropriate in some circles, while brown or oxblood shoes are sometimes frowned upon as overly fashion forward

I use the following guidelines for shoes with a navy pair of slacks:

Black: Conservative- white/blue shirt red/blue/gray tie
Oxblood- Less So- Pink/Lavender shirt, or white shirt with pink/lavender tie. Also still works with white/blue shirt w/red tie, just not as conservative
Brown: Also less conservative- I like to wear with earth tones like brown and olive, or with yellows and oranges.

Emerald greens I'd stick with black.

After a while, you'll kind of get a feel for what works for you...

I don't like it. But, it is pretty much the standard business dress. Everyone knows that if you want people who dress with taste, you've gotta get out of the corporate world and into NGOland or diplomatic circles...

(Even though people with such jobs earn MUCH less...) Peace, JG
