I wouldn't wear it if you're going to be dining with some Catholic Irish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_Tans

Of course, it'd be a big hit with your fellow diners if they're from Ulster, and a dash of orange would make the outfit even better.

Perhaps a Rangers scarf would be appropriate.

Aside from the unusually attractive male on TheSartorialist who can rock this, everytime I see black and brown I cringe. I find it a total faux-paux, if only b/c most people who do it have no clue about fashion. They just threw it on.

^^I don't have a problem if people just threw it on w/o caring about what they look like,
it's when people think they look good but are really clueless when i find it annoying

everytime I see black and brown I cringe.

This is why I long ago stopped paying any attention to "rules"... When I was younger I had always heard that I shouldn't wear black and brown together. But once I got over being afraid of it, I discovered that I LOVE to combine brown with black!

If you learn to wear the look with confidence (aka don't think about), I think that when hooked up with the right sport shirt, wearing a brown belt and brown shoes with black trousers can really look terrific! It's a great way to create some drama in an outfit, while still keeping it somewhat subdued.
