Are black shirts ever acceptable to wear any type of suit (except the black-black combination for special events) for work?

Depends on the line of work.

It's acceptable if you are an artist. If you're a musician or Eastern European mobster it's occasionally required. I'm not sure about other fields.

I would say no because black to black does not really fit together with shirts and vest. But it depends too like the one you mentioned about dress for work

I know it's not popular on these boards, but I like a black shirt once in awhile either with tie or sport coat and tie. I would not wear these to an important meeting or anything, but I like the look. Most people on these boards don't, though.

Black shirt with ties is the bank teller's uniform in California. Sometimes they even pair black shirt with gray suits. Perfect color combination for marsupialed city college drop outs.

The only time I would wear a black shirt is for the Yakuza look. All black with different textures, or black shirts with white suit and tie. But then that's not for work...

With a suit, no, but it would go well with a grey blazer and dressy jeans for a casual look.

I'm guessing they're bouncers.

Friend of my fiancee runs an company of bouncers and security personnel. They all look like that.

Aren't they all professional pigeon-fanciers?

I don't even know what you mean by "the black-black combination for special events". A black dress shirt is never acceptable.

I have a black dress shirt I bought a few years ago in college. Wore it one night out to a club. It has sat in my closet since....should probably bring it over to an SA soon.

I see some guys wear black dress shirts here at the office and it's a pretty horrendus look. Especially when they think they stand out in a good way with their Kenneth Cole square toes, black "polyraynylon" or whatever pants, and a black tie with red stripes....

I know we have an orientation which goes over the "dress to success" aspect very briefly, but my god some of these people need help ASAP.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
