Black overcoat with brown shoes?

Most of my outfits get worn with brown shoes but as winter comes I'm wondering about matching them with my overcoat. I have navy, brown and a black overcoat. Should I only wear brown and navy overcoats when I wear my brown shoes (which is probably 85% of the time)? I wondering if I can get away with a gray/navy suit with brown shoes with a black overcoat?

What do YOU do?

A lot of people have only one overcoat. I think you might be overthinking this just a bit.

Put on your suit and shoes and pick the overcoat you want. I don't think you can really go wrong unless the overcoat is really fashion forward or something.

Ha ha... is this another watch-band-matching-the-shoes over thinking it kinda deal?

Others may think differently. I wouldn't beat yourself up or anything.

Some people might actually think I'm being flip, but while I like reading these boards, sometimes people worry about things that will be okay either way.

This was more for my own interest, like I said, I was wondering what others were doing. Not too concerned with all the rules. I would have done either way to get some rotation amongst the coats.

I'd go with the navy or brown. But the black shouldn't be an absolute deal killer. You got to own it!

My overcoat is a camel hair polo coat. I almost never get to wear it down here. When it's cold enough, I wear it, no matter what else I have on!

I feel your pain, LVoer, although my overcoat is charcoal gray (Basically black from a distance, and I wear it with a black scarf and black fedora), but I have some brown Rockport shoes, and no one seems to care. I would say you're simply over thinking the issue at hand. Now...once I get that man I saw today to remove his white laces from his brown shoes, I'll be good to go...

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
