Black or brown as the "go-to" shoe choice?

I'll wear "brown" (in which I include tan and burgundy/oxblood as a broad category) unless I have to wear black pretty much. Funerals, black-or-white tie, black pants or suit (shaddap!) then black shoes are a natural choice. Otherwise, I'd much prefer a "brown".

You could start easing your way into brown by buying a pair of cordovan shoes and substituting them for black. Then get a pair of dark brown and try those for the cordovan. Eventually you'll end up with a pair of brown and white specs.

The style of the shoe has more to do with the level of formality than the color. I own cordovan bluchers, loafers, and monkstraps that can be very casual (the bluchers and especially the monks can be dressed up or down. The penny loafers are casual).

I'm in black shoes with dark suits at work pretty much every day and wore black shoes at school.

SO black leather shoes always feel like 'workshoes' for me so it's brown for me too for outside work sharpness - specifically a rich, deep tan.

A dark brown still looks quite sharp I think.
