Thoughts on an odd jacket in black linen? I know black worsted odd jackets are verboten, but I think a rumply linen coat with 3 patch pockets may look quite smart.

I think that could work. The harder question is whether it would work better than other choices.

Fair point. I love linen odd jackets, and already have 2 dark navy (SB+DB), chocolate brown (the W. Bill version) and cornflower blue (SB - Dugdale). Frankly, I can't think of any other colors that would work well, but am open to suggestions.

I've tried to love tan / beige linen, but have found that they look a bit much like resort wear.

Would like to break out of the blue/navy silo - 2 is enough for now (3 if you count the cornflower). Caramel brown is a color I like - but the examples I have seen are meh (Dugdale, W. Bill and Harrisons). Any specific suggestions on books, merchants?

Any black linen item that I have ever seen has looked absolutely awful. The thought of a black linen jacket makes me cringe because either you get a jet black piece of linen, which I think looks silly wearing in the summer/daytime or you get one of those faded color linens which will make the jacket look like an old version of a black jacket. I'd get dark green, maroon/brick, a nice peach/light red before black. If you hate the colors that you don't have, I would consider getting the colors you have in DB version if you feel you need more linen jackets.

:( ^ I was considering one of the faded black linens from Solbati. But sounds like most are opposed / lukewarm on the idea, so I'll give it some more thought.

+1.

Black odd jacket is not practical..

I have a black Dupioni silk odd jacket somewhere in the basement, gathering dust.....it's just not useful

The trouble with black linen is the same as with black suits; they will show dirt immediately, look dusty, show wear very fast and generally look beaten down after a few months of wear.

I do however like the aesthetic that could be achieved with a black linen jacket. Have you considered the idea of dealing with it as you might with a tux? Get a midnight blue that will deteriorate into a navy over 5 years instead of a grey over 3?

Indeed bottle green may even be a good choice, at night it looks inky black but during the day it has a bit more depth to it.

Problem is most black linens have an annoying shine. You have to make the cloth up on the wrong side to avoid this. Picking trousers that look great with a black linen jacket is difficult, IMO.

Tan and beige linen work better as suits than odd jackets. Ariston and Drapers and Scabal have the most interesting linens. Beautiful plaids for odd jackets.

Glad this thread was started. I just picked up a PRL linen/silk black herringbone SC and I am really loving it for a summer night thing. Would love to see pics of this in action *Vox*.
