Hey

I'm in the market for a pair of black dress shoes. I don't wanna spend too much on them and don't care too much for the brand. Just need something that looks good and can last me a while.

Any ideas? If you guys know of any deals/sales going on, that would be great too!

Get a used pair on eBay - Allen Edmonds or Florsheim Imperial would be a good place to start.

Any recommendations for a sleek plain toe in and around that price range (+/- $100)?

at a $100 budget, you're talking used park avenues, or new cole haans or something.

my advice, save a bit more, and get a nicer shoe. That extra $100 will pay off.

I think freelance is asking for sleek plain toe bluchers within $100 of what Park Avenues cost ($325), not sleek plain toe bluchers for $100.

To answer the question--not sure. Allen Edmonds pretty much owns that price range quality wise, and they aren't usually considered the sleekest. The AE Leeds would fit the bill, except it doesn't look all that sleek.

You might want to look at Brooks Brothers with their sale coming up (though their current PTB offering on the website does not look all that great, either).

thebac - thanks for the input. You are correct in your assumption of what price range I'm looking for. I don't want to go past $500. You are much more correct on your categorization of the Leeds not being so sleek - I think the lasts they used for those were a brick.

Quadcammer - the Cheaney Warwick are a very good looking shoe but still not a plain toe. Thanks for the idea though.

Why do people insist on suggesting Park Avenues?! They are blobby, chunky and slightly more elegant than an elephant's ass. I fell for that trap and had to return them later. There are much better shoes for younger people than PA, even made by AE.

Seems like I have to try to find a good used pair. My budget is kind-of tight right now. I can't spend more than $100.

Head to the Bay & look for this model: http://www.zappos.com/bostonian-akron

It's normally $150, but they've had them on sale recently for $100. They also carry some models by Florsheim. Nothing SF-approved, but they'll make fine "beater" dress shoes until you can save up to get something better.
